A young man named Mishael (Nathan Weaver) makes a deal with Sapphire the Witch Queen (Amanda Engelke) to obtain a cure for his dying wife, Rachel (Heather Chirban). This causes a chain reaction of events that leads to an overthrown King Joshua (Derek Baker) coming out of hiding with his Mighty Men in an attempt to take back the kingdom from Sapphire.

"The Chalice" is written and directed by David Chirban.

Daily Deviation

Given 2009-04-26
What can I say about this trailer that it doesn't say for itself? If The Chalice - HD trailer by ~OnyxDragonFilms is any indication of good things to come, then let's all hop aboard! Cinematography, pacing and acting in this teaser embody what fantasy films should be. Keep an eye on this deviant and for the feature film, for they're sure to deliver! "Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping"

Wow, a special thanks for featuring the trailer. I waited in anticipation for the results (comments) of the DD all weekend. I appreciate the feedback, and I will be getting this back to the writer/director David Chirban. I'm the bearded one :)

Ya know? The horse rider that doesn't know how to grip the reins, apparently. LAME. :(

But, yes, the feedback is nice. There are some audio issues with some of the dialogue in this trailer--I concur. Being as it is I edited it myself. The scene with Sapphire (Lady in Green, and no she isn't Elven--though I see your point) needs to be completely dubbed and we haven't done that yet. The strange muffled sound in the sequence was my attempt at killing the obvious airplane noise--unfortunately, until we dub, it was the best quality version. Major audio issues with that scene. But that's what dubbing is for... even if I hate dubbing with a seething passion. >:)

But thank you all so much, and please check out our other videos. I plan to upload a scene or two from "The Chalice" when I can, give you more of a taste.

-Nathan Weaver

@01:20If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. That is disrespectful to the filmmaker and your comment was not constructive whatsoever.

FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

okay then, the story line is over used there's so much stuff about those times it's ridiculous and I find it boring. It hasn't been very well filmed, it doesn't look like the guy can ride a horse and the voice quality is poor, in other words lame- it won't help the film maker by just restated what other people have critiqued nor will it help by people just saying cool. So yeah I can say whatever I want even if it's not nice, i think that going into detail makes it less nice myself.

You do not have to re-state the opinions of others, and if it has already been said, there is no need for a "that's lame" comment and then to hide it behind "Oh I said that because others already pointed out what I thought was wrong with it". You obviously do not understand what goes into creating a film, the many stages of pre-production and post production besides filming, and I suspect you do not watch many films here on dA or are versed in how to properly critique a film either. The entire process is incredibly hard and differs greatly from any other medium on the site. Your statement above does not lean towards critiquing and you have no suggestions on how to make it better, which would be acceptable, though your intentions are made clear in that that was never what you intended to do.

Please be aware that what you have done is flame, and as a deviantART Gallery Moderator in the film division it is my duty to see that people who flame are made aware that this is not tolerated on the site by any members. In cases of flaming, we do do various bans. I am certain you would not appreciate another member coming to your page and clicking a deviation of yours and putting the comment "That was lame" with no further explanation. It would be entirely unhelpful and serve no purpose whatsoever. I am further convinced that you would also not appreciate someone pointing out every fault in your piece without offering how to help fix it and improve it (as, when someone points out faults with something, they take on the responsibility of also informing one of how to improve it). Please be respectful to your fellow members of the site and do not act without first considering your actions. If someone did this to one of your pieces, it would be the same case and they would get the same notices from a deviantART Gallery Moderator such as myself.

@01:20I agree with the many who have commented before me. This is simply amazing! The sound was a little muffled during the clip with the (I assume elven?) woman who gave the chalice, but everything else was superb.
Keep up the great work!

All deviations, unless you are a subscriber and specify that you would like a critique, now say "Critique Discouraged". This is not something the filmmaker put up so it is not wise to judge the film like that. :|

While my decision may be unwise, you're statement is wrong.

Just like you can only have the "Critique Encouraged" label on a submission if you're a subscriber, you can also only label "Critique Discouraged" on a piece if you have a subscription.

The label does -not- automatically get slapped onto anything submitted. You can click on several pieces on the front page to see for yourself.

First off as a deviantART Gallery Moderator for film and knowing what goes on in my gallery, my statement is not wrong. "Critique Discouraged" is the current preset for all Film & Animation deviation submissions on the site. Perhaps I was not clear enough as this is a film-specific issue which we are aware of, but again, such a comment to the filmmaker was not warranted as if such a label took away from the film. It was out of their hands and encouraging or discouraging a critique does not change the piece's value.

For site-wide reference, whether or not a 'critique' is desired does not place greater or lesser value on a piece. And for film, requesting a critique would mean that the filmmaker is requesting pointers on how to improve their piece. Discouraging a critique would mean that they do not want to be told what to change. Critique encouraged or discouraged does not change a piece's intrinsic value and it is wrong to assume that. Your statement placed negative value on the film without watching it or even giving it a chance. That is why I have addressed the issue. I'm sorry if I was not clear enough about the film-gallery default being "critique discouraged", but this issue is about labeling things before you give it a chance, and that is not what deviantART is about, nor does it encompass out C.O.R.E. values. :|

@01:20In response...

1. "dancing with a tree may prove fatal..." Yes, this is true. And finally a movie will address this.

2. "does the asthma kill him in the end?" I'm not at liberty to say, but we are praying for a speedy recovery.

3. "what happens to the horse?" Pending the lawsuit...

@01:20Hmm... first look wasn't so good. Looks a bit cheap and it's hard to go through with fantasy genre if the budget is small. Story might be nice and all, but what I've seen from trailer it won't be blockbuster or even mediocre dvd sell out in all due respect to the artist.

I didn't want to sound like a jack ass, but thats what I saw. If it would please yourself I could say - I wouldn't have ability to make such movie. Still, I would like to see the whole thing, but you should surprise your viewers.

P.S. don't mind me, I'm one of those people who are really bitchy about art and what people do. So in that fact - consider this as encouragement to your future works ;)
